Donate your car in Idaho by 11:59 p.m. on December 31 and you may claim a charitable tax deduction for that tax year if you itemize on Schedule A. With Idaho Wheels Forward, most vehicles are sold at auction. When your car, truck, SUV, or RV sells for more than $500, we mail you IRS Form 1098-C within 30 days of the sale. Your allowed deduction is the vehicle’s actual gross sale price – not Kelley Blue Book or an estimate – and that amount appears right on your 1098-C. If your vehicle sells for $500 or less, we send a written acknowledgment, and you may generally deduct up to $500 or the fair market value, whichever is less. Keep your pickup confirmation as proof of the donation date, and always consult your tax advisor for your specific situation.
Idaho Wheels Forward makes year-end giving simple for donors from Boise, Meridian, Nampa, and Caldwell to Idaho Falls, Pocatello, Twin Falls, Coeur d’Alene, and beyond. There’s no inspection or repairs needed, and non-running cars are usually fine. Our nationwide towing partners arrange free pickup from most Idaho locations Monday through Saturday – from the North End in Boise and the Bench, to West Boise, Post Falls, Rexburg, and rural areas when available. You handle a quick 2-minute phone or online form, we handle the rest with Heritage for the Blind, a 501(c)(3) supporting people who are blind or visually impaired.

10 minutesOn pickup day, remove personal items, sign the title, and hand over the keys. The driver gives you a pickup receipt. This document is important: it shows the date you donated, which supports claiming your deduction for this tax year.
4. Vehicle sells, then we mail your tax paperwork
Varies by saleWe work with Heritage for the Blind to sell your vehicle, usually at auction. If it sells for more than $500, you receive IRS Form 1098-C within 30 days of the sale. If it’s $500 or less, you get a written acknowledgment instead. Save this paperwork for tax time.
5. Claim your deduction on Schedule A
At tax timeGive your 1098-C or acknowledgment to your tax professional or keep it with your tax files. You generally itemize your charitable deduction on IRS Schedule A. Your deduction is usually the gross sale price listed on your 1098-C, subject to IRS rules for your situation.
Year-end tax deduction facts
Deduction equals sale price, not KBB
For most vehicle donations where the car is sold, the IRS limits your deduction to the actual gross sale price, not Kelley Blue Book or private-party estimates. That selling price is printed on your IRS Form 1098-C.
Over $500 requires IRS Form 1098-C
If your donated vehicle sells for more than $500, Idaho Wheels Forward and Heritage for the Blind send you IRS Form 1098-C within 30 days of the sale. You use this form to substantiate your deduction with the IRS.
$500 or less uses a written acknowledgment
If your vehicle sells for $500 or less, you receive a written acknowledgment instead of Form 1098-C. In many cases, you may deduct up to $500 or fair market value, whichever is lower, subject to IRS rules. Keep this letter with your tax records.
You must itemize on Schedule A
To claim a car donation deduction, you generally must itemize deductions on IRS Schedule A instead of taking the standard deduction. A tax professional can help you decide whether itemizing makes sense for your Idaho return.
Dec 31 controls which tax year you claim
Your deduction is tied to the date you donate, not when the car sells. If your donation is completed by December 31, it typically counts for that tax year, even if the vehicle sells and your 1098-C arrives early the following year.
